Sam, the "World's Ugliest Dog"

auron_08-27-05

Auron's been sick for the last couple of days. We were not sure what to make of it. There were no real visible signs other than some minor bloating. The biggest difference was behavioral. Bettas aren't particularly animated, but they do SWIM. That's what fish do, right? Well Auron stopped swimming. He moved from time to time. But not like before, and certainly not like his normal behavior. We removed him from his 5 gal home and put him in a little 2 gal fishpital. We kept it filled half way, so if he wanted to swim to the top, he didn't have to swim so far. He looked to be lethargic, and uncomfortable. At times his breathing seemed to be labored and he'd lie down in a comfortable bed of leaves. For those who've never owned a fish, they eat, sleep, breathe, rest and play like any other pet. You know when something's wrong and you feel awful for them when you think they are suffering. Well Auron's not suffering any longer. He passed away early this morning. :(( He will be missed by me and Peggy, and by all his brothers and his sister. Swim free little buddy. o:-)

Flying Gurnard

Originally uploaded by Walt.

While at the same fish store, this little guy caught my eye. He's a Flying Gurnard. He's such a cool fish. He's got these huge pectoral fins. Sometimes he keeps them tucked in and sometimes he has them spread out like wings. When he's not swimming around, you're likely to see him walking around on the bottom of the tank (or ocean floor if you happen to be in the neighborhood). He just uses his little pelvic fins as if they were legs. Yes he's a very interesting fellow.

A trip to the fish store.

Originally uploaded by Walt.

I set up my Flickr acct so that I could moblog today. We also went to a fish store, so I thought I'd try it out to see if it works. Well, I guess it does work, and just fine I might add. This pic was of some sort of little spider looking crab. I'm not even sure what kind, I just thought it was neat and I thought it was a good opportunity to test this new feature of Flickr.

Killer Panda!

Originally uploaded by Walt.

A female journalist screams after being bitten by a giant panda in her left arm at the China Wolong Giant Panda Protection and Research Center in Sichuan Province. The journalist was attacked by the panda when she crossed a fence and posed for pictures with the bear.

Okay so maybe they are not exactly Grizzly Bears, but these cute little fuzzy black and white furballs can hold their own against people. Yikes! Click on the pic to see more, but the pic is pretty graphic and you may find it disturbing. @-)

Cops: Florida man threw son's dog from fifth-floor balcony

What a prick!

AUGUST 2--Meet Josper Sanon. The Florida man, 49, was arrested yesterday and charged with flinging his teenage son's dog off a fifth-floor balcony after the two-month-old puppy soiled the family's Miramar apartment. The dog, a black Labrador, died after being tossed more than 25 feet through the air from the 50-foot high balcony, according to the below Miramar Police Department report. Charged with felony animal abuse, Sanon was released yesterday from the Broward County jail after posting bail. If convicted of the dog killing, Sanon--pictured at right in a police booking photo--faces a maximum of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
